If you are looking for a massive open world where you can pretty much do anything you want, then keep reading. Ghost Recon Wildlands takes you into Bolivia to take down the Santa Blanca drug cartel. There are a variety of different missions that you must complete to accomplish this. If you want the help of the local Rebels, you can complete the side missions to strengthen their aid.
From the start Wildlands had me hooked. It took me a few minutes to get a good feel for the controls, (I’ve been playing The Division a lot recently). You start out in a safe spot where you can get a good feel for your character. Then it is off to your first mission.

Getting Around the Map
This Ghost Recon Wildlands review will touch on a little bit of everything. We will start with the map. As mentioned above, the map is enormous. Running to each mission on foot would take you forever. Instead you can jump in any vehicle of your choosing. Vehicles include cars, trucks, SUVS, motorcycles, helicopters, planes, and even large front-end loaders. Oh ya, if you really want to, you can make your way on a tractor as well.
These vehicles can be found scattered throughout the map, some are free to take with no resistance. Some you can throw the driver out of the car and steal it. Whichever way you get your vehicle does not matter. What matters is the fun you will have trying to keep it in one piece while getting your destination.
Missions and Side Missions
The missions can be challenging at first. But as you learn the game you will get a better feel for what works and what doesn’t. One big factor in every mission is your environment. The missions are scattered all over the map. Each area has its own scenery, some surrounded by trees and foliage while others are surrounded by water. Some areas have a ton of cover which allows you to be nice and stealthy. There are areas with little to no cover that will require a decent game plan before engaging.
The missions eventually give a sort of “World of Warcraft” vibe in the fact that they can seem a little bit repetitive. Go do this, go do that, go get or kill the boss. However, each mission can be completed in a different way. There is no predetermined path to what you have to do to achieve your objective. This is an extremely redeeming quality to the mission structure.
Side missions are the little green icons you will see scattered across the map. These range in difficulty but are grouped in similar categories. Side missions will have you either mark a supply drop for pickup, steal a helicopter or plane, stop and tag a convoy, or steal a vehicle. Side missions share the same quality as main missions which mean there is more than one way to successfully complete them.
Coop or Solo Play
Solo play is fun. Going through the campaign at your own pace on your own terms is great. While playing solo you get three NPC (non-player character) agents that assist you. You have some limited control as to what you can have these agents do. Controls include telling them to Fire on your target, hold position, go to position, and regroup. Controlling the AI agents requires some practice to make them effective. But with some practice the AI Wildlands agents can make your solo play quite enjoyable.
If you want to have a ton of fun (or if you love to troll people) then coop is a very fun aspect of Ghost Recon Wildlands. I play online with a close group of friends, including my older brother. He decided to trick me into going to my drone view while he jumped out of the helicopter. I noticed I was spinning in circles when I came out of drone view but it was to late, I crashed and burned. We had a good laugh. Now he can expect some C4 strapped to every vehicle he attempts to drive when we play.
Coop Play
What would a Ghost Recon Wildlands review be without discussing Coop? Coop play offers a chance to have a ton of fun just messing around and exploring. But it also gives you an opportunity to coordinate your missions. With real live players, you can communicate who does what, and mark your targets and go all in.
Also, if you have already completed the missions and want to help someone else, you will still get XP for completing the missions again. If you haven’t unlocked the missions but are playing with someone who has, you will still get XP but it will not unlock those missions for you. This means you can go back in solo play and enjoy the storyline.
Controls
Ghost Recon Wildlands is a third person shooter. The controls are similar to pretty much any shooter out there. I play on PlayStation 4, so it is the basic R2 fires, L2 is aim, and joysticks control the character. There are some controls I didn’t realize were available until I read them in the tips of the loading screen. You can zoom your scope in even further (if it allows) by holding L2 and tapping the right button on D pad.
As far as controls go for this Ghost Recon Wildlands review, I will say you will want to take the time to learn and get use to them. In every game I play the first thing I do is go to the controls options in the menu and see what does what.
The movement and controls in the game are really fluid. Everything flows smoothly as you should expect and it makes for a very enjoyable experience. I am disappointed that there is not a roll including in the game, and you can’t really peak around corners. You can however do a sort of blind fire when you see arrows on your crosshairs if you are at the edge of a wall or ducked behind a box or something.
Ghost Recon Wildlands Review – Gameplay Discussion
A Ghost Recon Wildlands review wouldn’t be complete without discussing the gameplay. The movement and controls work together almost seamlessly and everything you do feels natural. You can also adjust your look speeds for aiming, driving, and looking. These controls are something you will want to adjust soon, I have my aim speed set to 95 percent and my drive look speed set to 25 percent. These controls were set at 40 or 50 percent by default.
One thing in the game that I find a little annoying is dying. When you are shot down in solo play you have to wait for one of the AI team mates to revive you. If you die a second time you fail your mission.
I agree with the failed mission part. It would be nice to see the ability to just “give up” if you die a first time in solo play. Sometimes I just want a quick restart, instead I have to wait for one of the AI members to run over. There are times this has caused me to fail a timed mission as well. They wait until there is about 2 seconds left on the mission and then revive you. This is not a deal breaker, it just means I have to die less.
Ghost Recon Wildlands Review – Wrapping Up
Overall I find Ghost Recon Wildlands
an extremely enjoyable game with lots of replay value , in both single player mode and coop mode. I do look forward to PVP opening up because that will add a whole new realm of fun to the game.
There is a ton of skills and objectives you can uncover in the game. Some of these are harder to get to than others but with the right vehicle you can get anywhere on the map. My biggest piece of advice is to learn how to fly a helicopter right away. They will get you where you want to go the fastest. They can also be death traps if you don’t know how to land them well.
The Tacmap will keep you informed on where you need to go. Clicking a mission or side mission will highlight a path on the map for you to follow. You won’t be left guessing where you need to go next. The game also offers a variety of different difficulties that you can change at any time, so adjust it according to the type of challenge you want.
A Final Word
I did have some issues with the NAT Type error that caused issues connecting to online play. This doesn’t seem to be just a local issue however because I did some research to find that others around the gaming-sphere have the same issues. There are quite a few threads out there that provide information on how to fix the issue. This issue was not a deal breaker for me because I am usually able to connect 99 percent of the time. Ghost Recon Wildlands is a definite keeper and I think it has a lot in store for its players in the future. If you are asking yourself “Should I buy Ghost Recon Wildlands?” I would answer a huge yes if you are into shooters and/or Grand Theft Auto. This game is like perfect combination of the two.
