Games in 2022, ranked by concurrent peak players

Destiny 2

Destiny 2’s concurrent numbers over the past twelve months are actually much higher than what we’ve listed here if you were to count performance on consoles and PC.

Our 213, 681 figure is based purely on Steam numbers, but we bet that number would have at least tripled with the platforms added to the mix. Unfortunately, we don’t have that data, but it’s fair to say that developer Bungie’s hybrid shooter/RPG will likely dominate the genre for years to come.

Especially given that Bungie now has the final say on the direction of the content’s progress now that it has split with Activision. Free from the shackles of the overlords of publishing, there is a renewed sense of enthusiasm among the community and we get the feeling that Bungie is determined to live up to its vision of creating a plethora of content for Destiny 2.

Grand Theft Auto V – 260,562 (Steam)

Somehow, seven years after its launch on the previous console generation, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V is still one of the most played games in the world. It’s a seemingly unstoppable force that regularly ranks in the top 10 best-selling games each month.

In the past six months, it has seen over 260,000 concurrent players, which is just incredible considering it is not a competitive PvP experience, which we usually associate with high concurrent player numbers.

Apparently GTAV is a mandatory purchase for new console and PC players, and since so much content has been added since launch, we expect the game to continue posting impressive numbers in 2021.

New RPG Legends of Ellaria Introduction

Dota 2-801,121
A sentiment long taken for granted is that the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena genre is dying out. But while it’s true that MOBA games aren’t growing like they once were, don’t think for a second that they’re still incredibly popular.

DOTA 2, the sequel to the genre’s founder, still overshadows most of the competition. Over the past 12 months, it has regularly been near a million concurrent players, and sometimes even more than that total, despite having been around for nearly a decade.

Mutant Duck Invasion

The 801, 121 number quoted above for this ranking is taken from April 2020.

Like CS: GO, the presence of esports has fostered a passionate community of players who are in no hurry to move to a new IP. DOTA 2 is also making a big noise in the east, particularly in China, which accounts for a significant percentage of its player base.

PUBG – 913,075
The game that started a frenzy reshaping the entire multiplayer gaming landscape in recent years, PUBG still commands a huge audience despite the Battle Royale genre being overrun with copycat titles.

The most notable, of course, was that it was copied by and then replaced by Epic Games’ Fortnite. PUBG’s premium model and its slowness in arriving on consoles saw it fall behind pretty quickly as Fortnite began to gather steam.

But while PUBG may no longer reign supreme over battle royale, it still offers a tactical military sim experience unmatched by other games in the genre. This, and the fact that the mobile version is also extremely popular (figures not included in the statistics above), should see PUBG’s community soldier on in 2021.

Counter-Strike: GO – 1,305,714
Counter-Strike: GO is the FPS that just won’t quit. In April 2020, it had the highest number of concurrent players ever, at 1.3 million. Not only is that a hugely impressive figure in and of itself, but the game has been providing this kind of performance for eight years.

A strong esports presence and the brand power of a franchise that has been around since the late 1990s has ensured that CS: GO has an edge over newer releases.

Apex Legends – 2 million
Respawn’s Apex Legends stealth dropped out of nowhere and then proceeded to take the Battle Royale genre by storm. It proved to be the perfect recipe of immersive gameplay, AAA production quality and a free-to-play business model that managed to temporarily dethrone Fortnite and PUBG as the most played and most watched multiplayer games.

The numbers have certainly dropped since the opening month saw a record 2 million concurrent players, but despite the occasional bump along the way, the community has remained quite large. It’s safe to say that Apex has made its way in the genre and secured its place for the foreseeable future.

Minecraft – 1.4 million+
Minecraft is a juggernaut that just keeps steamrolling, but we’ll acknowledge that we’re cheating a bit with our listed stat here.
